What is a hydrangea?

Hydrangeas are native to Asia and the Americas. Macrophylla types are the familiar mopheads of temperate gardens. Panicle hydrangeas (H. paniculata) flower later and are more often a garden than a cut-florist crop.

Garden mophead colour can be blue, purple or pink depending on aluminium availability and soil pH — a well-documented horticultural effect. A cut stem from a florist, however, will not change colour in your vase.

Cut hydrangeas are available for much of the year from specialist growers, with a natural flush in late spring and summer in many northern gardens. They are thirsty and are often conditioned by recutting and, in professional work, sometimes submerged briefly to revive limp heads.

How to care for hydrangeas
