A peony is a long-lived perennial grown for showy flowers. Florists usually mean herbaceous garden peonies (Paeonia lactiflora hybrids) rather than woody tree peonies.

Peonies are perennial plants in the genus Paeonia, grown for large, often fragrant flowers. Their outdoor season is short — typically late spring into early summer in temperate Northern Hemisphere gardens — which is why they feel special and can be expensive. Commercial growers in both hemispheres and cold-storage techniques extend florist availability beyond a single local month.

What is a peony?

Peonies are native to Asia, southern Europe and western North America. Chinese cultivation is ancient; the flower remains an important cultural emblem there. In Europe and North America they became staple garden plants in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Blooms may be single, Japanese, anemone, semi-double or fully double. Colours run from white and blush through coral, pink and deep red. Many cultivars are fragrant; some are only lightly scented.

The local garden season is brief. In much of the US, Canada, the UK and northern Europe, outdoor peonies open for a few weeks between May and early July depending on climate and cultivar. That scarcity is part of their wedding-market appeal.

Florists stretch the season by buying from different latitudes and by holding tight buds in cold storage. Southern Hemisphere harvests can supply northern winter weddings. Still, peak quality and more accessible prices usually coincide with the natural flush.

What does a peony mean?

In Chinese tradition peonies are associated with honour, wealth and feminine beauty. In Western wedding culture they more often signal romance and a lush, garden celebration.

Victorian floriography sometimes linked peonies with bashfulness. Modern gifting rarely uses that reading. Treat colour and occasion as more useful than a single 'official' meaning.

When is peony in season?

If you want locally grown peonies in the northern US, Canada or the UK, plan for late spring. Exact weeks shift with weather.

Do not assume a florist has no peonies in October. Opposite-hemisphere farms and stored buds can appear, but stems may cost more and open differently.

Coral cultivars often flower earlier than many late pink doubles, so 'peony season' is a window, not a single week.

Alaska, the Pacific Northwest and cooler northern states are known for quality field peonies; the Lower 48 season is mostly May–June.

How to care for peonys

Recut stems and give them room — opening blooms are large and heavy.
If buds are tight, a slightly warmer room can help them open; once open, cooler air slows them.
Change water often; peony foliage in the water sours quickly.
Support heavy heads if the vase is narrow.

Pet safety: The ASPCA lists peonies as toxic to dogs, cats and horses if ingested, causing vomiting and other gastrointestinal signs.

Pollen: Double forms shed less obvious pollen than many single flowers.
