What is a sunflower?

Sunflowers are native to North America and were domesticated for seed long before they became ornamental cut flowers. Commercial breeding now includes pollen-less cultivars that last longer in the vase and shed less mess.

Outdoor gardens in the Northern Hemisphere typically flower from midsummer into autumn. Florists can source stems for more of the year from greenhouse and import channels, but the flower still feels seasonal — people expect sunflowers in warm months.

They suit birthdays, thank-yous and congratulations because they read cheerful and informal. Large heads need sturdy wrapping and a heavy vase.

What does a sunflower mean?

Use a heavy vase and recut the thick stems.
