Dahlias are tuberous plants from Mexico, bred into an enormous range of forms and colours. They are a late-summer and autumn cut flower. Vase life is moderate and they dislike heat. They are wedding-popular when the date falls in season, and they have little of the year-round supermarket presence of roses.

What is a dahlia?

Aztec cultivation predates European breeding. Nineteenth- and twentieth-century hybridising created the show bench diversity gardeners know.

Cut dahlias are seasonal. Some storage and opposite-hemisphere product exists, but most people meet them in late summer.

How to care for dahlias

Harvest or buy when nearly open. Recut, use clean water, and keep cool. They are not long-haul supermarket flowers.

Pollen: Double forms shed less than singles.
