How to Cut Flower Stems

Use clean, sharp secateurs or a knife. Cut at a slight angle so the stem does not sit flat on the vase floor. Avoid household scissors that crush hollow stems.

1. Wipe the blade clean.
2. Cut 1–2 cm off the bottom at an angle.
3. Place the stem in water promptly so the cut does not seal in air.

Woody stems (roses, chrysanthemums) benefit from a fresh cut more than a smash. Splitting stems is optional and not required for most modern cuts.
